North Lake Campground is a small and remote campground situated at 9,500 along the North fork of Bishop Creek. The campground gets its name from nearby North Lake, an alpine lake which is one of the most stunning in the Eastern Sierra.
The campground has 11 first-come, first-served campsites, including three short walk-in sites. This campground is limited to tent camping only, as the narrow, winding road leading to it is unsuitable for trailers and RVs.
Each site has a picnic table, a fire ring with a grill, and a bear-proof food storage locker. Leased pets are welcome. Cell phone service is generally unavailable.
Amenities include a vault toilet. There is no piped water on-site, so visitors should bring their own water or be able to filter water from the nearby creek or lake.
The campground typically operates from late May to early or mid-September, weather permitting. Due to its small size and popularity among backpackers and anglers, arriving early to secure a site is advisable, as reservations are not accepted.
Due to its elevation and shade from the surrounding forest of Jeffrey and Lodgepole pines, the campground rarely gets too hot, even in the summer.
But mosquitoes can be prevalent in the spring and early summer, so bringing insect repellent is recommended. The campground and nearby areas are extremely popular for viewing autumn colors in the fall.
North Lake Campground is an excellent base for outdoor recreational activities, including fishing, hiking, and photography.
About half a mile down the road is North Lake, a 13-acre alpine lake surrounded by aspens. The lake offers trout fishing throughout the season. Motors aren’t allowed on the lake, so anglers often use float tubes or small hand-launched rowboats.
Bishop Creek is a short distance away and a favorite spot for anglers, with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife stocking the creek during fishing season.
The campground is also popular with hikers due to the proximity of trailheads leading into the John Muir Wilderness, including paths to Lamarck Lake and Piute Lake.
These trails provide access to numerous alpine lakes and eventually connect with Bishop Pass and the Pacific Crest Trail, making it an ideal spot for day hikes and backpacking trips.
Also nearby is Rainbow Pack Outfitters, a family-owned business that has operated since 1924. They offer mule and horse rides, ranging from 15 minutes to full-day adventures for those looking to explore the backcountry. They also provide full-day fishing trips and mule pack trips.
Though located only 20 miles from Bishop, the campground is remote, so bringing the necessary supplies, including drinking water and food, is recommended.
Otherwise, you can reach Bishop about 35 minutes down a narrow, winding road where you will find restaurants, gas stations, supplies, entertainment, and more.
Nearby campgrounds include Sabrina Campground, Bishop Park Campground, Lower Intake 2 Campground, and Upper Intake 2 Campground.
