Ellery Lake is a picturesque alpine lake situated along Tioga Pass, just two miles outside the eastern entrance of Yosemite National Park. At an elevation of 9,489 feet off Highway 120, it’s one of the highest lakes accessible by road in the Sierra Nevada.
Ellery Lake’s deep-blue, clear waters, framed by rugged rock and a towering mountain backdrop, make it a favorite spot for visitors. Even better, you can drive up to the lake and park and enjoy the views with minimal effort.
Although it feels like part of Yosemite, the lake is just outside the park boundaries, so no entrance fee is required. Though one of the region’s most beautiful lakes, it is man-made, with a dam at its eastern end.
The journey to Ellery Lake, between Lee Vining to the east and Yosemite to the west, is an experience in itself. The steep road is one of the most scenic in the Eastern Sierra, beginning in the sagebrush plains of Mono Valley. The higher you go up Tioga Pass, the landscape transitions to a rugged alpine environment with waterfalls and stunning mountain vistas.
At over 9,000 feet, snowfall limits road access in winter. Therefore, visitors by car can only access the area when Highway 120 is open, which depends on snowfall. The road typically closes with the first snowfall and reopens in spring or summer, usually between May and July.
One of the best things about Ellery Lake is its fishing, often better than most lakes in Yosemite, thanks to its clear, cold waters. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife also stocks the lake with rainbow trout.
Popular areas to fish include the east shore, where Lee Vining Creek flows into the lake, especially in the early morning and late evening. Another popular spot is the outflow area near the dam, where the deeper pockets of water tend to draw in fish.
You’ll find good fishing along the north shoreline next to Highway 120, with easy access to the water. For a quieter spot, try the southwestern shore, where rocky outcrops make for a more secluded fishing experience.
While there isn’t an official trail around the lake, many anglers, hikers, and photographers enjoy walking along its shoreline. There are also plenty of hiking opportunities in the area.
Those looking to stay overnight will find Ellery Lake Campground, steps away from the lake on Lee Vining Creek.
The campground is first-come, first-served but is often full due to its location. It accommodates tents, while some sites can handle vehicles up to 28 feet.
As the area is quite remote, it’s a good idea to pack supplies and extra drinking water. The nearest town, Lee Vining, is 10 miles to the east, but the road is steep and winding. You’ll find restaurants, shops, gas stations, and other necessities in town.
