A few miles south of Lone Pine, off Highway 395, is Diaz Lake, a popular recreational area known for fishing, boating, and mountain views. The lake is named after the Diaz family, early settlers who owned the land where the lake is located today.
The lake did not exist until March 26, 1872, when the 7.4-magnitude Owens Valley earthquake struck, causing extensive damage. The quake formed a fault scarp or large crack in the earth. As the water table rose, water began to fill in the depression, creating Diaz Lake.
After the earthquake, the lake became an important resource for the community of Lone Pine, providing water for both citizens and livestock in the arid Owens Valley environment.
Over the years, Diaz Lake has become a popular spot for recreational activities, including fishing, swimming, camping, and boating. On the western shore, you will find Diaz Lake Campground. And unlike other lakes in the Eastern Sierra, Diaz Lakes allows both motorized and non-motorized vessels.
Between May 15 and October 31, and on the first Saturday in March for the Early Opener Fish Derby, motorized watercraft are allowed on the lake. Non-motorized watercraft, including kayaks and canoes, are permitted year-round.
Up to 25 motorized watercraft are allowed daily on the lake, 20 of which are first-come, first-served. Boaters can reserve the other five spaces by calling 760-878-8457.
Diaz Lake has several fish species, including rainbow trout, largemouth bass, catfish, and bluegill. Those with a boat can fish in deeper parts of the lake, while those without can fish along the shoreline.
Despite its origins as a result of a natural disaster, Diaz Lake has become an integral part of the Lone Pine landscape and remains a popular spot for both locals and visitors.
