Bootleg Campground

Bootleg Campground, California

Bootleg Campground is a campground located 22 miles north of Bridgeport along the West Walker River on Highway 395 at 6,650 feet. Though located off Highway 395, the campground is quiet, offers plenty of privacy, and is usually less busy than nearby campgrounds.

The campground features 63 campsites suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs up to 40 feet, though no hookups are available. Each site has a paved pad, picnic table, fire ring with a grill, and food storage lockers.

Big spots and large pine trees provide privacy, shade, and plenty of space for campers, especially for larger RVs and trailers.

While located near the highway, the campground feels remote and quiet, with just the faint sound of passing cars. Many people pass by without noticing the campground, so finding a spot is often not a problem.

Amenities include potable drinking water and flush toilets. Firewood is available for purchase from the camp host, and cell phone reception is generally unavailable. Leashed pets are welcome. California campfire permits are required for campfires.

Bootleg Campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis from late May to mid-September, weather permitting. Reservations are not accepted.

The best part of Bootleg Campground is its proximity to the West Walker River, located just across Highway 395. The freestone stream runs nearly 100 miles and is a favorite for rainbow and brown trout fishing. It is also heavily stocked by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Besides fishing, the surrounding area offers visitors access to hiking trails, mountain biking routes, off-road driving, kayaking, canoeing, and more.

Though remote, the campground is a short drive from the towns of Bridgeport and Walker, where you will find restaurants, shops, gas stations, supplies, and other services.

Nearby campgrounds include Chris Flat Campground and Sonora Bridge Campground.
